How does the Muslim calendar work?
Islamic calendar or Hijri calendar has been devised in times of Umar (r.a), the third caliphate of Islam. Till this point Arabs and Muslims didn't have a calendar and that they marked a specific important incident to recollect any year. for example:The year of elephants: When Abraha, a christian ruler walk kaaba to demolish it, the lead of the war elephants he brought stopped and refused to enter boundary of kaaba, therefore the mission failed. hence the Name. this is often THE YEAR PROPHET MUHAMMED (PBUH) WAS BORN.Later in times of Umar ibn al khattab (r.a) it had been decided to plan a calendar to denote Muslims era following wide spreading of Islam. After many serious discussion, they prescribed starting the Islamic calendar from the year Muhammed (PBUH) entered Medina (Yathrib, as known at those times) because it was the foremost significant event for Muslims which changed everything and marked the beginning of the glory of Islam. Then they named Muharram as first month. The first Ten months however wasn't numbered and named after events within the lifetime of Prophet (PBUH).The year of permission. The year of the order of fighting. The year of the trial. The year of congratulation on marriage. The year of the earthquake. The year of enquiring. The year of gaining victory. The year of equality. The year of exemption. The year of farewell.According to this, it had been actually 16th year of Hijra, when Islamic or Hijri calendar itself devised.
